Or rather the lack of it. I really don’t like working with some of my coteachers, and the general attitude in the school. The kids are fantastic, but the system is dragging everyone down and it’s not helping.
I have my coworker who’s working with Julie, and Julie has been teaching for 25 years now. That coworker expects me to have brilliant classes like Julie’s and I can’t possibly pull it off because I’m new and I don’t even want to deal with really little kids. When they said elementary school I didn’t think I would be some glorified nanny for kids who want to pronounce English words better, let alone become subject to pressure to perform better. We’re not allowed to do our own thing here, we’re glued to the book (which is awful by the way) and we have coteachers who have inferiority complexes that drive me nuts.
They do so much work here, and they expect me to pull of an A+ work all the time. So I try. And when I try they don’t appreciate it, instead they raise their expectations much higher. They try commenting on my teaching but it’s so apparent that they’re sarcastic, and they’re implying something else other than the real intention of what they’re trying to say..
Bottom line is, I still have 8 months or so and I can’t wait for those 8 months to end. I really really don’t like it, and I’m glad Isabelle isn’t like any regular Chinese style thinker.

I’m fine I’m fine I’m fine I’m fine I’m fine
Just got kicked out of a bus somewhere in downtown Jiaxing because I tried to:
1) get my cellphone number changed in the bank so I can get notifications for when my salary arrives
2) cancel my old number so I don’t get charged 19 RMB/month for a number I don’t even use anymore
I took the cab from the school to the bank because I wasn’t sure where to get off via bus.
Plan number 1 didn’t work because, just like the first time I went to the bank to get my online banking ready, I needed my passport to do something in the bank. And my passport has been detained in the police station for 2 weeks, for God-knows-what application for residence permit should take that long to stamp on my passport. I can’t set up my online banking on my phone, I can’t get notifications on my phone, and I can’t use the website for mobile banking because —- you guessed it —- it’s in Chinese. Apparently, to access online banking, I also need to install some profile on my computer that Mac doesn’t even recognize. And my app for mobile doesn’t work because I fucking installed iOS 8 on my fucking iPhone and it doesn’t recognize apps that haven’t been updated yet.
Plan number 2, I was planning to get on the bus and get off to the nearest China Mobile store near the school, but 3 stops later the bus driver was yelling at the people in the bus to get off. So I got off, clueless as to where I was. I wanted to check my location through Google Maps but lo and behold, VPN won’t work. BaiDu maps won’t work either —- you guessed it —- because of my fucking stupidity to install iOS 8. I waited for a cab near the curb, and this guy on a bike called out to me to say where I was going. I waved him away but he kept insisting I get on his bike. Frustrated, and being baked under the searing heat of the midday sun, I waited and waited for a cab that would at least take me back to school before my afternoon classes.
Cab # 1 arrives: comes over, asks where I’m going, and I say the name of my school and he speeds away.
Cab # 2 comes: I say the name of the school and he doesn’t understand.
Cab #3 comes: I say the intersection of the streets where the school’s at, and mimed the crossing between the two roads and said the name of the school and he seemed to understand.
I’m back at the school now, plugged my phone in, and guess what app just updated to ‘optimize’ for iOS 8: BaiDu maps.
For goodness sake.
But I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine. Because anything I say for 5 times must be true.
And I still have 10 months to go.
